Why is sawmill gravy called sawmill gravy?
The term "sawmill gravy" comes from early logging camp food and old-time sawmills. It was originally made with cornmeal, bacon drippings, milk, and seasonings. This resulted in a somewhat gritty gravy; in fact, rumor has it that the loggers would accuse the cooks of putting sawdust in the recipe!
What is the white gravy called?
A country-style gravy—sometimes called a white gravy—is really just a pan sauce made from the drippings in a skillet after cooking meat. It's most often made with milk that's thickened by making a roux—cooking flour into the remaining fat in the pan.
Why is gravy white?
The name “white gravy” refers to the lighter color of gravy, which is caused by adding milk or cream to the gravy's base. White gravy, also known as sawmill gravy, is very popular in the southern United States.
Why did KFC change their gravy?
As more and more restaurants were added to the KFC family, execs realized that some of the recipes (the gravy included) were just too complicated to be executed affordably, cheaply, and by people who weren't necessarily trained chefs.
Is KFC gravy bad for you?
KFC's mashed potatoes and gravy is probably the chain's most iconic side — although they themselves insist they "won't fight you if you want to call it a meal." Probably fair enough too, considering it contains 19 grams of carbs and 530 milligrams of sodium, but that's up to you.
Why is KFC chicken so juicy?
The chicken is amazingly moist — thanks to a special device. The pressure fryer not only lets KFC cook chicken faster and with less oil, but it also locks in moisture. Witherly theorizes that it may also drive some of that salt and MSG into the meat, making it that much more delicious.
