Why is there Pork in Beans?
Traditionally, to make pork and beans, you would put rinsed, soaked beans into a pot with water, seasonings and brown sugar (and probably molasses, too), and a slab of salt pork or bacon and let it cook down slowly over relatively low heat. The fat from the pork would add richness as it contributed to the flavor.
