Is there a difference between icing and frosting?
In broad terms, frosting is thick and fluffy, and is used to coat the outside (and often the inner layers) of a cake. Icing is thinner and glossier than frosting, and can be used as a glaze or for detailed decorating.
What is dirty icing?
Dirty icing just means that your icing can be “dirty” with crumbs in it. And it doesn't have to be pretty and smooth. We are just sealing in the crumbs to keep them out of our smooth coat and sealing in the cake to keep it from drying out.
What is the most popular frosting?
buttercream frosting
How do you make icing shapes?
Sift the fondant icing sugar into a bowl, then set aside 2tbsp for later. Take a quarter of the fondant icing sugar from the bowl and mix with the water to create a smooth, thick paste. Gradually add the rest of the sugar until the mixture has dough-like consistency and formed a ball shape.
What is used to decorate the cake?
Fondant is primarily used to cover cakes, but it is also used to create individual show pieces for cakes. Royal icing is a sweet white icing made by whipping fresh egg whites (or powdered egg whites, meringue powder) with icing sugar.
How do you ice a cake without it falling apart?
You can coat the cake with a melted jam first. I do this to stop crumbs getting in the icing, but it should work for your problem too. Just warm a little bit of jam in a pan and put on with a knife or a brush.
What can I use instead of an icing smoother?
If you don't have an icing spatula, you can use the back, straight edge of a large knife to smooth your buttercream and then clean up the bottom of your cake plate with a paper towel.
How do you smooth out buttercream icing?
Metal Smoother Just so you know, you'll want to get all your icing onto your cake with a large buttercream spatula, then just use the smoother to take off the excess. You'll notice it sort of pushes up the buttercream to the top. You'll then just take a small icing spatula and pull those edges into the center.
How do you smooth buttercream without tools?
If you don't have an icing spatula, you can use the back, straight edge of a large knife to smooth your buttercream and then clean up the bottom of your cake plate with a paper towel. Next, take a freezer bag and fill it with your icing. Push the icing into one corner and twist the bag.
