Why is Splenda not good for you?
Splenda isn't bad for you, but it can cause some negative health effects like an increase in sugar cravings which may lead to weight gain. Some preliminary studies in animals have shown that Splenda may affect gut health and cause GI issues. An excess of Splenda may also cause you to have higher blood sugar.
What are the healthiest artificial sweeteners?
Stevia — in packet, drops or plant form — is a dietitian favorite. Not only does it contain zero calories, but stevia-based sweeteners are herbal as opposed to artificial. Stevia blended with a sugar alcohol called erythritol (Truvia®) works well in low-carb baked desserts, too.
Which sweetener is the most cariogenic?
A study published in Brazilian Oral Research notes that sugar (sucrose) is the most cariogenic of all carbohydrates, meaning that it's the one most likely to cause tooth decay.
Is Stevia banned in Canada?
Health Canada doesn't allow stevia or its extracts to be used as a food additive in this country because of insufficient evidence to support its safety.
What is the catch with stevia?
As with most nonnutritive sweeteners, a major downside is the taste. Stevia has a mild, licorice-like taste that's slightly bitter. Some people enjoy it, but it's a turn-off for others. In some people, stevia products made with sugar alcohols may cause digestive problems, such as bloating and diarrhea.
