What are patacones in English?
Patacones or Tostones are made from green plantains peeled and cut cross-wise. Patacones are fried twice. Patacones are served in restaurants all over Colombia as a side dish for fish dishes or as an appetizer with guacamole, hogao (tomato and onion sauce) or ají (hot salsa).
When should you eat patacones?
Patacones are one of those perfect snacks, especially on a sunny day, they can be eaten alone, with dipping sauces and also as sides for ceviches, seafood dishes, pretty much anything. As a standalone snack or appetizer, I love to serve them with pickled red onions and aji criollo hot sauce.
What do patacones taste like?
As they get more and more ripe, they become softer and sweeter, although even overripe, almost black, plantains aren't as sweet as bananas. Sweet plantains are also often fried and they are so delicious with an almost tangy, sweet and slightly sour taste that I love.
