Why are my baked potatoes exploding in the oven?
Why do baked potatoes explode in the oven? ... So as more steam builds up inside the potato as it cooks, pressure begins to build. When the pressure is stronger than the potato and its skin can hold, the potato explodes to release pressure and makes a mess in your oven/microwave.
How do you keep baked potatoes from exploding?
A russet potato is usually about 80 percent water, so poking it and trimming off the ends will help the steam escape. Sometimes a potato could be even moister and the water, especially in a larger size potato may be trying to escape as steam from the middle cells of the potato.
What happens if I microwave a potato?
When cooked in the microwave, a potato will come out softer but still quite dense. When cooked in the oven, a potato will come out fluffy with a crispy skin. If you prefer fluffy potatoes with crispy skin, there is a workaround. You can partially cook the potato in the microwave and then finish it off in the oven.
How do you microwave a potato without it exploding?
Place both halves flat side down on a microwave usable dish. If using paper plates, use more than one; otherwise the plate(s) might break through from the moisture when removing from the microwave. Slicing the potato in half obviously reduces the explosion risk, but putting a couple more holes in each half won't hurt.
