Do I need two tomatillo plants?
Tomatillos grow in the summer garden just like their relatives: tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers. In fact, the leaves look a little like the foliage of eggplant, but the fruit is like no other. You will need two or more tomatillo plants for the blooms to be pollinated and fruit to be produced.
How can you tell if a tomatillo is pollinated?
Tomatillos are pollinated by bees and other insects that move from flower to flower. When temperatures or humidity are extremely high, the pollen adheres to the inside of the flower, making pollination difficult. As a result, the flowers may drop from the plant before they are pollinated.
Do tomatillos come back every year?
In warm areas (like Mexico) these plants grow year-round with an indeterminate growth habit. In colder climates, grow tomatillos as annuals and care for in the same way you would take care of tomatoes. In very warm climates, they are self-seeding and/or you can sow the seed directly in the ground.
How do you get rid of bugs on tomatillos?
You can hand pick and also spray with insecticidal soap (which you can either do your self, or use Bayer's) You also might want to mulch around your plants with oak leaves.
What animals eat tomatillos?
Because of the husk, birds and other animals do not bother tomatillos as they would tomatoes. Flea beetles, slugs, and snails can be irritating pests that affect the tomatillo fruit, so make sure to watch for insects chewing through the leaves.
Can I pick small tomatillos?
Tomatillos can also be harvested when they're small, before the husk turns brown or splits open. They just won't be as sweet. So, if a hard freeze is coming, you can pick all the ones that are left on the plant, and still use the small ones for your recipes.
Are small tomatillos okay to eat?
You can tell as soon as you slice into a tomatillo that it isn't really a tomato; in place of the tomato's ribs and squishy seed-pod goop, the tomatillo is crisp and airy, with tiny edible seeds sprinkled around its core.
Can tomatoes cause loose stools?
Due to the presence of excess acidic and greasy contents, tomatoes are bound to make your stomach churn. This may lead to diarrhoea in people who suffer from tomato intolerance.
