What I would call a toastie is made in a toastie maker. while it is called a grilled cheese sandwich the Americans don't actually grill/broil it ( like we do with sausages ) they fry it in a pan until the cheese has melted. I personally make mine under a grill.

It all depends on your taste if you think adding butter to the toast with jam will taste good then you should add butter and if you think it won't taste good then better don't add butter to it.
