Does mozzarella have less lactose than cheddar?Cheeses such as mozzarella, provolone, cheddar, Swiss and blue cheese generally contain less than 1 gram of lactose per ounce. By comparison, a 1-cup serving of low-fat yogurt or cottage cheese contains between 4 to 6 grams; milk and ice cream contain as much as 11 grams per 1-cup serving. Why can I eat cheese but not ice cream?Treatment for lactose intolerance consists of either avoiding lactose-containing food or supplementing your body's supply of lactase enzyme. You may notice that you are able to tolerate cheese but not ice cream, or yogurt but not milk. Can drink milk but not cheese? Some people who cannot drink milk may be able to eat cheese and yogurt—which have less lactose than milk—without symptoms. They may also be able to consume a lactose-containing product in smaller amounts at any one time. Why does milk upset my stomach but not ice cream? The small intestine needs lactase enzyme to break down lactose. If lactose is not digested, it can cause gas and stomach cramps. Can lactose intolerant eat yogurt? In addition to some kinds of cheeses, some people with lactose intolerance may be able to eat yogurt in moderation, as the lactose has been partly broken down. While milk chocolate contains less lactose than milk or cream, it still contains dairy in high amounts. Always check the label and eat in moderation. Read also
