The drink is popular in Mexico where it's known as Agua Fresca de Jamaica and there are dozens of theories as to why a Mexican drink has the name Jamaica in it. The answer is simple – it originated in Jamaica. The beverage is hibiscus tea.

Delicious and creamy Horchata (Dairy Free)
- ½ cup of washed white rice raw white rice.
- 1 ½ cup raw almonds.
- 2 cups hot boiling water.
- 2 - 3 cups cold water or regular water, I use about 2 ½ cups.
- 1/3 cup sugar more if you like it sweeter.
- 2 sticks of cinnamon.
- Generous pinch about ¼ tsp of freshly ground nutmeg.
- 2 tsp vanilla.
How do you strain horchata?
The next day, strain the horchata using a strainer and cheesecloth. Press the solids against the cheesecloth-lined strainer to get out all of the liquid and serve over ice. (You could also blend the horchata, strain and serve over ice.)
How do you strain horchata without a strainer?
If you're concerned about over-dilution, keep reusing the same water until you think you're done. If you don't have this kind of a sieve, a colander lined with a flat-weave dish towel would work, too, but that'll take significantly more effort.
Can horchata go bad in the fridge?
Storage. Horchata will keep fresh in the fridge for up to 10 days. The best thing to do is to remove the lid from the pitcher or container and give it a little smell. If it's gone bad, you'll definitely know.
