How long should you cook clams?
How long does it take to steam clams? It takes about 7-9 minutes to steam clams. Be sure not to boil the clams or they can become tough, a gentle simmer is all that is needed. The clams are cooked through when the shells have opened.
Are clams bad for cholesterol?
Shellfish which are molluscs (such as cockles, mussels, oysters, scallops and clams) are very low in cholesterol, about half as much as chicken, and contain much less cholesterol than red meats - so these do not need to be avoided by anyone.
How do you know if steamed clams are bad?
Since soft shell clams often can't close all the way, tap or touch the side of the shell or the siphon to see if either moves. If the siphon is small enough to retract, it will. If there's no response to tapping or touching, the clam has perished and should be discarded. Fresh clams shouldn't smell fishy.
