Is it OK to drink raw egg in eggnog?
Eggs must be cooked to 160 degrees F to kill bacteria such as Salmonella that may be present. If your eggnog recipe calls for raw eggs, it may not be safe. Adding alcohol inhibits bacterial growth, but it cannot be relied upon to kill bacteria.
Is Egg Nog raw?
Most homemade eggnog recipes have historically included raw eggs. While the alcohol added to many homemade eggnogs is a bactericide, eggnog freshly made from raw eggs that are infected with salmonella and not heated can cause food poisoning. A very small percentage of raw eggs are infected with salmonella.
Why is it called Tom and Jerry?
They were named after a cocktail. In the early 19th century, "Tom and Jerry" was a British term for rambunctious youth, as coined in the 1823 book Life in London, or Days and Nights of Jerry Hawthorne and his elegant friend Corinthian Tom by Pierce Egan.
Do you need to refrigerate eggnog?
Eggnog requires consistent refrigeration, so if you leave it out in temperatures of 40 to 90 F for more than two hours, you'll need to discard it. In ambient temperatures above 90 F, discard your eggnog after it sits out for more than one hour.
Should eggnog be cooked?
Make the eggnog recipe with pasteurized eggs. Although this heating process kills any salmonella that might be present, the FDA and USDA still recommend cooking your eggnog.
