Should you oil a knife blade?
Oiling the blades of kitchen knives, especially those made from carbon steel, is an important part of maintenance and will protect against rust and corrosion. Mineral grade oil is best, though cooking oil can be used.
Is WD-40 good for knives?
Yes: It makes the food you slice with your knife taste funny! WD-40 is great for taking tape residue off of a blade, but I'm another one in the camp of preferring something less toxic on any blade that might ever go near my food.

Why do knives come oiled?
The best knife oils clean, prevent rust, condition, and help sharpen a knife's edge, and while some oils perform all four functions, others may only prevent rust, clean, or hone the blade. Knife oils come in different types and, depending on the knife, one knife oil may work better than another.
Can I use olive oil on my knife?
Use oil sparingly as it may stain or harm some knife handles. Also oil on a stored knife can attract dust. Oils such as the 3in1 and olive oil are not really for lubricating but for cleaning the blades. For lubricating and storage you will want to use a lightweight honing or mineral oil designed for knife care.
Is coconut oil good for knives?
Coconut oil is a good, food-safe oil for wood-carved utensils such as wooden spoons, spatulas, bowls & knife handles. The oil preserves the wood and prevents cracking.
Do you need to oil carbon steel knives?
The only down side to high carbon steel is that it will rust if you do not take care of it. To prevent this, keep your knife as clean and dry as possible after use, and apply a light coating of oil periodically. For culinary knives, olive, vegetable, canola or sunflower oil is fine.
What oil do you use for carbon steel knives?
Just about any oil will work – from clove oil to olive oil, and there are even some oils on the market specifically designed for knives. We recommend canola or corn oil over olive oil as olive oil can go rancid over time, but any food safe oil or wax will work.
