Is Edam a melty cheese?
Edam cheese also has the right pH, according to the FDA. Fontina and muenster are other good bets for melting, according to Sargento, while feta and chevre, though tasty, aren't so great in a warm sandwich, because they won't melt in the way you want.
Can you eat the red skin on Edam cheese?
The red coating on Edam cheese is paraffin wax, which is indigestible but harmless. You can eat it, it will just pass through, but it has no nutritional value, so there's not much point.
Can you eat the wax on Port Salut?
The rind is edible, but is made of wax and detracts from the flavour of the cheese. Handmade Port Salut cheese or "Entrammes" cheese is still produced by various monasteries throughout the French countryside.
Why does Edam have red wax?
The wax originally helped preserve the cheese by preventing surface mould from developing: it still serves this purpose, though now, it has an additional, thoroughly-modern purpose — to help market the cheese by giving it a distinctive look on the cheese counter. In the Netherlands, Edam is sold without a wax coating.
Is babybel an Edam?
Babybel, a French version of Dutch Edam cheese, is sold internationally by 'The Bel Group, France' since 1952. In 1977, the company introduced Babybel's smaller version 'Mini Babybel', a delightful snack packed with calcium that is ready-to-eat anytime and anywhere.
What is Edam cheese used for?
Much of the Edam cheese is produced in Holland where it originated. Edam is also produced in Argentina, but it has a slightly different flavor and texture than Dutch Edam. This cheese can be served as a breakfast cheese, an appetizer, a snack, or as a cheese used in cooking.
