Can you use plain flour instead of all-purpose flour?
Plain Flour AKA All-Purpose Flour One of the most commonly used types of flour is the all-purpose flour or plain flour (also known as pastry flour or cream flour). So, the answer to the question; is all-purpose flour the same as plain flour, is a resounding yes there is no difference!
What can I substitute plain flour with?
Either cake flour or pastry flour can be used as a 1:1 substitute for all-purpose flour in most baking recipes.
Can I replace corn flour with plain flour?
No, there's no gluten in corn flour, so it would be very flat and dense. Corn flour can be used with plain flour to add texture and sweetness, like in cornbread. As the only flour for this recipe, you'll end up with a completely different dish.
Can I substitute self-raising flour for plain?
If the recipe calls for plain flour with the addition of baking powder (or another leavening agent), self-raising flour can be used instead, simply omit the leavening agent. If the recipe does not include baking powder or a leavening agent, do not substitute plain flour with self-raising flour.
What do I add to plain flour to make self-raising?
Method
- Add 2 tsp's of baking powder to each 150g/6oz of plain flour.
- Sift the flour and baking powder together before you use it to make sure it's all evenly distributed.
- If you are using cocoa powder, buttermilk or yoghurt you can add ¼tsp of bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) as well as the baking powder.
