How do you fix dry cracking soil?

How do you know if Clay soil is dry?
If your soil dries like a brick with cracks when it's dry, or in clods, and is like putty when wet sticking to shoes and tools, you have clay soil. It is hard for most roots to penetrate such soil.
Why must land not be kept bare?
The bare areas of a field are very susceptible to erosion. Without anything growing on them, the soil is easily picked up and carried away. The fields also experience more erosion in the winter if no plants are growing on them and they are just left as bare soil.
What is 90% of the biological stuff in soil?
Soil is generally composed of 50 percent solid material and 50 percent space. About 90 percent of the solid portion of soil is composed of tiny bits of rock and minerals. These solid particles range in size from fine clay to mid-range silt to relatively large, coarse sand.
How do you fix cracks in clay soil?
To fix your cracking lawn, you need to water it. First, however, you should aerate it to loosen it up. When soil is dehydrated, it shrinks to become more compacted. Aeration loosens the compacted soil by scoring it with hundreds or thousands of small holes, each of which is a few inches deep.
Why does my yard have big cracks?
Why You Get Cracks Because you have cracks, your soil is likely clay. The clay particles in this soil are like a sponge in that they swell when they soak up water from a rain and then shrink when the soil dries out. If you go through a dry spell, this shrinkage can be bad enough that you will see cracks on your lawn.
